Onat Tungac | Head Coach

Onat Tungac joined the Waves Swim team 2017 as the club’s Head Coach. His mission is to help grow the popularity of the sport of swimming. Born in Izmir, Turkey, Onat has had an international swimming career! Coach “O” began swimming at an early age for Fenerbahce Swimming Club in Turkey, is an eight-time member of the Turkish National Team and represented Turkey at the 2005 World University Games.

In 2008, Onat graduated from Henderson State University where he received numerous awards including nine-time Athletic All-American, eight-time Honorable Mention All-American, and Henderson State University Record Holder from 2004 – 2008.

Coach Onat started the Central Arkansas Swim Club-Racers in 2008 with his college teammate Patrick Bass. He was the Co-Head Coach for the Racers Swim Team and also served as the Vice President of the Racers Board 2008-2016.

Coach Onat’s International competition background is a great resource to the Waves Swim team. He knows what it takes to be successful in the sport of swimming at all levels of swimming. His passion and intensity for swimming, along with his experience are his greatest strengths! Swimmers feel his dedication and genuine care and know that he is about winning in the water and at the game of life.


Chris Allen | Assistant Coach

Coach Allen joined the Waves coaching staff in 2011. He swam at Lakewood High School and continued his swimming career at Mount Union College. He is a huge Cleveland sports fan and hopes to visit all 30 major league baseball parks.


John Bailey | Coach

Coach Bailey was the owner and head coach of the Westside Waves Swim Club for more than 15 years. He is enthusiastic about introducing new swimmers to the sport and helping each athlete reach his or her goals. He is easily spotted at practices and meets in his signature tie-dyed t-shirts.


Karla Bailey | Assistant Coach

Karla has been coaching the Waves with her husband, John, since 1998. She primarily coaches the Green and White group but also enjoys coaching the older swimmers too. Other than spending time at the pool, she enjoys doing yoga, reading, and having a good time with friends and family.


Amanda Bates | Assistant Coach

Coach Bates joined the Waves coaching staff in 2014. She was one of the original Waves when her parents started the club in 1998 and continued to be involved with the team through her college years. She was captain of her swim teams at Westlake High School and at The College of Wooster. She still enjoys training for triathlons and open water swims.
